Urban Poets symbolize a re-convergence of strictly slamming sounds. The late 80s and early 90s saw an explosion in UK hip hop; at the time a crew called New Wave Poets (NWP) released an EP and an album on their own label, Scary Productions. As far as history tells it, NWP were the only hip hop crew back then to release vinyl from Southend-on-sea in Essex; If not the first, then certainly one of the first in the area.
Not long after the completion of the Five Shades of Funk album and a two-track appearance on an unsigned vinyl promotion, the members of the crew went their separate ways.
Now 14 years later the veterans of UK Essex hip hop are back, with fresh sounds, slamming tracks and the same focus on conscious lyrics. This re-convergence of firing street rhythm is to be known as URBAN POETS; made up of two of the main members from NWP, URBAN POETS promise to deliver something refreshing to the UK hip hop scene.
URBAN POETS encourage you to witness the lyrics of real lyricists spun over the sublime production of DIMENSION PRODUCTIONS and BIG TEETH.
In a recent twist of events URBAN POETS have embarked upon a collaboration with THE BLACK MILK COLLECTIVE, and BIG TEETH; this emphasizes the concept of the 're-convergence' as the main lyricist in THE BLACK MILK COLLECTIVE was also a key member in the original crew NWP. |
